Survey Results: Fuel Up to Play 60 Making a Difference in School Wellness
In Spring 2012, we asked Fuel Up to Play 60 supporters how the program is going in their schools. Fuel Up to Play 60 is now in nearly 73,000 schools nationwide – and more than 11,000 adults in enrolled schools responded to our call for input! This feedback is crucial because that’s how Fuel Up to Play 60 improves – with suggestions from supporters like you.
The survey confirmed what we’ve been hearing from schools across the country: Fuel Up to Play 60 is making a difference in school wellness. Thanks to efforts by engaged adults like you, we’re seeing real momentum.
Here’s a quick snapshot of what you told us.
More students are participating in Fuel Up to Play 60. Now, 11 million students around the country are involved in the program. That’s 3.5 million more than last year! Schools receiving Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 report higher levels of student involvement: nearly one quarter of schools receiving funding have 100% of the student body involved with Fuel Up to Play 60 activities. And with more students engaged in the program, we’re seeing greater changes in school wellness.
More adults are helping lead Fuel Up to Play 60 at their schools. More than 26,000 adults play the crucial role of Program Advisors – those key adults who help facilitate the program at their schools. The survey shows that the more adults who help, the easier it is to implement the program and the farther a school can go in making positive changes.
Fuel Up to Play 60 engages school administration and staff. More than half of those who responded to our survey say that Fuel Up to Play 60 helps them engage school administration and staff. With that kind of support, school wellness can really take hold.
In the last two years, more than half of Fuel Up to Play 60 schools have completed a Healthy Eating Play or a Physical Activity Play, and many schools have implemented both types of Plays – ideal for addressing energy balance. Check out the list of the top 10 Plays.
Fuel Up to Play 60 helps schools achieve their wellness goals. Nearly two-thirds of educators in enrolled schools say Fuel Up to Play 60 is helping them achieve their wellness goals, and 69% say the program is positively influencing their school environment. There has also been a notable rise in the percentage of those who say the program is increasing access to healthy foods on campus, helping students make healthier food choices, helping to increase the amount of time students are physically active and increasing opportunities for students to be physically active before, during and after school.
Fuel Up to Play 60 generates broad support for school wellness initiatives. Three in four Fuel Up to Play 60 schools participate in other school wellness initiatives – including programs like the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge. In fact, one third of those who responded say that because of Fuel Up to Play 60 student and staff engagement in and administrative support for other wellness initiatives has increased.
