Want to find out which foods kids really like? Want to know which foods to add to your regular menu offerings? Try a taste test! One user says, "When we have something new on the menu, we set up a taste test for the kids so they can give input on the flavor and whether or not they like it. We also have taste tests to try out new products that might be on the menu next year."
Fuel Up to Play 60 taste tests are happening all around the country! At Whittier Elementary School in Sioux City, Iowa, the school district foodservice director put nutrition information to practice with a "Taste Test Day." At Rogers Middle School in St. Louis, Missouri, the cafeteria staff helped implement a smoothie taste test. And at Cheyenne Elementary School in Peoria, Arizona, students got to vote for their favorite milk flavor (the winner was strawberry!).
Wondering how to get started? Fuel Up to Play 60 offers three taste test Plays that engage students along with school nutrition staff in planning and implementing the events: "Taste Test Breakfast," "Taste (Test) a Rainbow" and "Taste Test Days." You'll also find tips for conducting a winning taste test.
Remember, a successful taste test is a team effort - ask students and adults to help you plan and hold the event. Also make sure you coordinate efforts with your school's Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor (you can find out who this person is by logging on to your Dashboard). If you're not already a Program Advisor yourself, consider signing on for this leadership role. Every school needs one or more!
And share with us what you're doing! All school nutrition professionals who submit a Success Story (with at least one photograph) between November 1 and November 30 will be entered into a random drawing to win a Fuel Up to Play 60 prize pack. To tell us about taste tests or any other Fuel Up to Play 60 activities at your school, click here.
