Congratulations to River Ridge Middle School from Bloomington, Wisconsin, for producing the winning Physical Activity Challenge video! The winning school will receive an NFL player visit.
Also, students can celebrate the end of the school year with the Touchdown Dance Challenge. This Challenge will encourage students to get creative and make up their own versions of the celebratory dances NFL players have made famous. The Challenge will begin May 30 and will remain open through July 18.
This month's "Activate Educators" column is written by Cindy Coughlin, a Program Advisor at Alice B. Beal Elementary School in Springfield, Massachusetts. In March, Cindy was honored as a Let's Move! and Physical Activity Champion of Change and attended a ceremony at the White House!
Since I was named a Let's Move! and Physical Activity Champion for Change, many people have asked me how I built a stand-out Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Here are some of the things we've done at our school to get students energized and on board.
Start small, and let the program evolve each year. Keep the program fresh: change it every year. This year, we featured our second annual Healthy Snack Recipe Challenge, building on the success of last year's event. But we're also adding new Plays, such as our after-school running program, which we started at the end of March.
Build in healthy competition. Kids love prizes and rewards - and we've found a no-cost way to reward students for healthy behaviors. Each week, we set a healthy eating challenge, physical activity challenge or school-related challenge for students throughout the school. For example, in one of our dairy challenges, students tallied the amount of dairy they ate and drank in a week. The winning classes got to have one of two blow-up cows in their classroom for the week. "Battle for the Cattle" has created quite a buzz!
Involve Student Ambassadors. These student leaders are the heart of our successful Fuel Up to Play 60 program. The Student Ambassadors go around to classes to explain the weekly/monthly Fuel Up to Play 60 challenges and to collect any materials related to those challenges. The students really do it all!
Have co-Program Advisors. Although students help us run the program, it takes dedicated adults to make the program happen. I've been fortunate to have Sandra Collins join me as a Program Advisor. Two heads are better than one!

The annual NFL PLAY 60 Draft Youth Football Festival took place on Tuesday, April 24, and Wednesday, April 25, at Chelsea Waterside Park in Manhattan. The festival engaged more than 600 students from local schools in a number of on-field football skills and drills run by USA Football and Under Armour coaches.
Over 600 students from schools within the American Dairy Association & Dairy Council's territory were invited to participate as a reward for being active in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. The students took part in a number of on-field football skills and drills while they learned the importance of eating right and being active for at least 60 minutes every day.
In addition to Physical Activity Plays, Fuel Up to Play 60 also provides a wealth of physical activity resources. These resources help you expand or increase the physical activity opportunities at your school. There are activities, school-wide program ideas and other resources to help make physical activity a priority for students and adults, both in school and out.
All 50 states participate in the federally subsidized school dinner program - up from six that took part a few years ago. In some areas, hard hit by the tough economic times, officials say they expect the number of students eating dinner at school to continue to grow.
Schools and community groups around the world can now link to the San Francisco-based Edible Schoolyard Project, which promotes school gardens, healthier cafeterias and an integrated curriculum. The project helps combat childhood obesity and promote health education.
