  • Webinar Series Highlights Summer Food Service Program
Each summer, 22.3 million students are at risk of going hungry when the school year ends. For many children, school meals are the only complete and nutritious meals they eat, and in the summer they go without those meals.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) can help to fill the summer meal gap for low-income children. Faith-based, community and private non-profit organizations can make a difference in the lives of hungry children by serving meals with SFSP, a federally funded, state-administered program that reimburses organizations for meals served to children during the summer.

Join the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) in one of the free upcoming webinars in the 2011 Summer Food Service Program Webinar Series! Sessions scheduled for the general public are:

    • Tuesday, 3/8/11, 6:00pm - 7:00pm EST

Advocates Cite Research in Push for Universal Breakfast

Fewer than half of qualified students participate in school breakfast. This news is part of the Food Research and Action Center's annual School Breakfast Scorecard. In 2009/10, schools with the highest participation rates offered free breakfast to all students, handing out
grab-and-go meals or serving hot breakfast in the classroom. Studies indicate school breakfast increases academic achievement, improves classroom behavior and trims obesity rates.
