This eNewsletter is a companion to the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, designed to help you manage and guide students as they lead the way toward school wellness!

60 Seconds to Claim Your School's Recognition Certificate!
When your school completes the actions for Step 3 (Youth Challenge and/or Kickoff Play), Step 5 (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Plays) or all Six Steps, you'll qualify for a Recognition Certificate and recognition from your District Superintendent!

The suitable-for-framing Certificates of Healthy Achievement, acknowledging each Program Advisor by name, will be mailed beginning in late April to the principal of all qualifying schools, so the whole school gets recognized!

In addition to the certificates, a recognition letter will be sent to the District Superintendent this summer, acknowledging all schools/Program Advisors.

Make sure your school's Program Advisor checks off all of your completed Six Steps Milestones on their Dashboard to make your school eligible! (Find your school's Program Advisor in the My Team area on your Dashboard, or become a Program Advisor and check off the Steps yourself!)

  • Michigan Program Advisor Takes the Spotlight Reward!
    Program Advisor and science teacher Beth Moeller from Anna M. Thurston Middle School in St. Charles, Michigan, is this month's Activation Reward Spotlight Winner.



    Beth has been especially good at recruiting other adults to help with the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. From the principal to the school foodservice director, from classroom teachers to student leaders, the entire school has gotten involved. Read more about Beth's successful program!

    Beth will receive a $500 gift card, and 51 more Program Advisors across the country will receive $100 gift cards.

    To qualify for the monthly Activation Rewards drawing, schools must have at least one adult signed up as a Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor, and the school must have activated its program. Here are just a few of the ways a school can activate Fuel Up to Play 60: Congratulations to all the winners! Be sure YOUR school is eligible for the monthly rewards and all other benefits of Fuel Up to Play 60 by naming one or more staff or community members to serve as your Program Advisor! Join the more than 10,000 schools that have this all-important adult heading the program!
  • Weighing in on America's Future: Childhood Obesity Summit

    On March 15, Fuel Up to Play 60 and Gen YOUth Foundation in partnership with Washington Post hosted a panel of influential thought leaders in Washington, D.C., to discuss the national health crisis of childhood obesity. Speakers addressed the role of government, schools and communities in addressing the problem, and attendees participated in discussions on solutions to the problem. In the photo, Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Greg Jennings congratulates winners of the Kids Post essay contest, which asked kids how they would combat childhood obesity.   • Program Activators Speak at National Fuel Up to Play 60 Planning Meeting

    Three individuals who are activating Fuel Up to Play 60 in their schools and districts spoke at a national planning meeting for the 2011/12 roll-out of the program.

    Monica Lursen (left), executive director of the Iowa Dietetic Association, shared her experiences as a volunteer at Waverly-Shell Rock Junior High in Waverly, Iowa. P.E. teacher and Program Advisor Cherie Jackson (middle) talked about the successful program at Jane Addams Middle School in Bolingbrook, Illinois. And Jill Lucius (right), Director of Food Services (Sodexo) for Fitchburg Public Schools, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, provided insights about how to work with Fuel Up to Play 60 at the district level.
  • Kids Eat Right Supports Fuel Up to Play 60
    Do you have questions about what foods kids need to eat more of? Are you feeling like you could use some help with nutrition information? A new website full of information from Registered Dietitians is at your fingertips. Go to www.kidseatright.org and click on the Shop Smart. Cook Healthy. and Eat Right. icons to discover a wealth of information, ranging from nutrition guidance to sports nutrition. You can also click here and here to learn more about what others are doing and where you might get support for implementing Fuel Up to Play 60.

National Student Ambassadors and State Representatives Announced
Fuel Up to Play 60 recently announced the National Student Ambassador and State Representatives on FuelUpToPlay60.com with a new section dedicated to them.

Check out the new page, which highlights the Student Ambassadors and their involvement in the program. You can also find more information on the Student Ambassador Program on the website here.

As a reminder, applications for local Student Ambassadors will be accepted until May 15, 2011. To nominate a student, download a nomination letter here.

Students Answered the Challenge!

What an amazing year of Challenge entries! From last fall's Kickoff Challenge to last month's Game Time Highlights Challenge, students were engaged and excited as they shared their Fuel Up to Play 60 successes.

More than 2500 entries were posted throughout the year. To see some of them, check out the Fuel Up to Play 60 channel on SchoolTube. And watch for news of a Summer Bonus Challenge. Details coming soon!

When a student (or adult) uploads a Challenge entry, all students in the school will receive a special digital badge and a downloadable reward. AND the school may win additional rewards from their local Dairy Council or be featured in a national eNews! Remember: To easily view your school's Challenge entries, just log in to your Dashboard and see Challenges.

Texas Program Advisor Connects Wellness, Academics and Community

Ples Robinson, Program Advisor, Science and P.E. teacher at Grapevine Middle School in Grapevine, Texas, heads a very active student-led
Fuel Up to Play 60 program.

Grapevine students spread the word through a milk mustache contest and through "Fuel Up to Play 60 News You Can Use" - short weekly announcements made over the PA system.

Students are also activating Plays from the Fuel Up to Play 60 Playbook. Their monthly Taste Tests have been very popular, and the Drink Milk and Recycle Play has been a big hit! A Walking Club is launching this spring, and thanks to students' efforts, In-Class Activity Breaks are now featured in 70% of Grapevine's classrooms.

Also contributing to the program are the PTA president, the school counselor, a parent and the City of Grapevine Parks and Recreation Department manager.

Breakfast Efforts Give Boost to Kids
Breakfast has proven academic and health benefits for students. Fuel Up to Play 60 and its partners can help your school get breakfast to students who might be missing out! Try a breakfast Play in your school, and explore the tools and funds available for breakfast programs and promotions.

NFL Corner

NFL PLAY 60 Youth Football Festival, April 27-28

NFL PLAY 60 Youth Football Festival will take place April 27 and 28 as part of the NFL 2011 Draft event schedule. More than 550 students from Fuel Up to Play 60 and other New York City public schools will be invited to take part in the two-day event, which will be held at the Chelsea Waterside Park in Manhattan.

During the festival, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will kick things off in a clinic with potential first- and second-round draft picks. Students attending the event will get to interact with NFL draftees and players, as well as coaches from USA Football as they lead the kids in NFL FLAG football skills and drills.

Other NFL PLAY 60 partners such as HOPSports and American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, Inc. (ADADC) will be on site to provide the kids with additional play areas to keep them active and moving, promoting the message of the PLAY 60 campaign.

Milestones: Steps 5 and 6

Now that the school year is coming to a close, it's time to make sure you've completed the last two Fuel Up to Play 60 milestones. In Step 5, Game Time!, you'll use the Interactive Playbook to take action for healthy change. And in Step 6, you'll Light Up the Scoreboard! by sharing your success stories.

Healthier US School Challenge Gets Funding Boost

First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced additional funding to grow the HealthierUS School Challenge. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will use $5.5 million to add programs and double membership by next year.

Public Votes for Favorite School Lunch Recipe

A website lets users vote for best school lunch recipes in USDA's and Let's Move's Recipes for Kids Challenge. Schools, chefs and students were challenged to come up with healthy recipes that meet nutrition standards, and 15 semi-finalists are up for public vote through May 15.
